BUCKFIELD – Selectmen voted Tuesday night to have Town Manager Glen Holmes send a letter to Roger Bennett and his attorney stating that Bennett has 14 days to remove junk from town property or a guardrail will be installed beside the town recreation trail.

Bennett has been contesting the property line for several years.

“This thing has gone on long enough,” Selectman Oscar Gammon said. “We’ve had the property surveyed by two surveyors, and both have said that the town owns what they say they own. It’s time to get that rail up.”

The trail is a former railroad bed.

Also Tuesday, Holmes suggested the town investigate having Graham Bell’s junkyard cleaned up and sending him the bill. He said he talked to some dealers who said the junk was worth enough that they wouldn’t charge for hauling it away.

Gammon again said it was time to take action.

Holmes reported on setting up the new gazebo in the town center. The Beautification Committee has sponsored the lighted structure in the center of the elm-lined park. Modern Woodtech in Lisbon made the structure, and Holmes praised the company and thanked Skip Boucher of Auburn Concrete and the town highway crew for helping set up the gazebo. He also said an anonymous donor had put in security cameras aimed at the gazebo and the parking lot. The lot had been recently marked with rubber.

Holmes informed the board that a grant had been filed with the federal Department of Homeland Security for emergency equipment for Buckfield, Sumner and Hartford. It was submitted by Tom Standard, who acts for the three towns in emergency management.

The board approved a loan for $185,000 to pay for the new firetruck that was OK’d by voters in June.

Holmes informed the board that Time Warner communications company had sent notification of a rate increase to take effect on Jan. 15. The basic service will go to $17.85 per month.

Holmes also said the next regional meeting on school consolidation is scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 27 at Buckfield.
