Dear Sun Spots: Community Concepts’ Elder Rides program needs donations to keep serving our friends and neighbors. We are quickly running out of funds to get senior citizens to critical kidney dialysis appointments and chemotherapy treatments.
Elder Rides transports senior citizens who don’t have a car or don’t drive to their life-saving appointments. Since January 2007, our volunteer drivers have helped 159 people with 5,139 trips to dialysis and chemotherapy appointments. The funds we raise are used to reimburse volunteer drivers for the miles they put on their own cars.
Our Androscoggin United Way money is already used up and we are nearing the end of other small grants that we received. We may be forced to suspend all but the most critical drives unless we can get more money soon.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please call us at 795-6073. Donations may be sent to: Community Concepts, Elder Rides Attn.: Advancement Office, 79 Main St., Auburn, ME 04210. Thank you. – Linda Prince, Auburn.
Dear Sun Spots: A few weeks ago an 80-year-old lady had written in who wanted some puzzles to do. She gave a phone number of 782-9550. I have tried several times to call her, but cannot get an answer. If she could please contact me, I am willing to mail her a puzzle and when she gets it done she can mail it back to me and I will mail her another one. I will pay the postage both ways. My name is Nancy Nemethy, 900 Auburn Road, Peru, Maine 04290. Or if she would like to call me, my number is 562-7396. – Nancy Nemethy, Peru.
Dear Sun Spots: A few years ago, you wrote an article about some agency who wanted donations of military memorabilia, including uniforms and more. I thought I kept the article, but I cannot find it. Could you please repeat that information. I have several items that might be appropriate donations. Thank you. – No Name, Lewiston.
Answer: Consider contacting the Maine Military Historical Society, Camp Keyes, Augusta, ME 04333, 626-4338 to see if it can assist you. In addition, perhaps you might contact your local historical society to see if it might be interested in your items.
Sun Spots also spoke with Mike Smith of the Bath Lodge of Elks 934 Veterans Committee, which was featured in a previous column and who says they too are still in need of donations. He says they are looking for donations of military dress and work hats representing the five U.S. military services, Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard. You can reach Smith at 233-2831 or call Chuck Billings at 882-4024.
Dear Sun Spots: I’m looking to find a potato peeler. Not a hand peeler. One that you insert a potato into a gimmick that peels the potato by a handle. I had one. It broke and I disposed of it. It was bought in the Lewiston-Auburn area but I don’t remember where and can’t find one. I have tried an apple peeler but it was too hard to punch it in. It is non-electrical, stands up and the company’s name starts with something like RO.
I do not have the skills or access to a computer. Maybe Sun Spots can locate one for me? Thank you. – No Name, No Town.

Dear Sun Spots: Thank you to all of those who stepped forward to make my children’s’ Christmas a good one. I received many offers from people and organizations willing to help. I will not be contacting all of you because I know there are more families than just my own that need help this season. There truly are lots of good people in this area. You have all been a blessing to our family. I hope you are all blessed for your good deeds to others! My family and I thank you all! – Mom of Four in Turner.
