GORHAM – The University of Southern Maine School of Music will present two jazz concerts in early December. At 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, Michelle Snow will direct the USM Vocal Jazz Ensemble in a concert of swinging music.

At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, the USM Jazz Ensemble, directed by Chris Oberholtzer, and the USM Lab Jazz Ensemble, directed by Doug Owens, will present an evening of traditional and contemporary works for big band. For the larger Jazz Ensemble, Oberholtzer has selected pieces from the Duke Ellington library, the Artie Shaw library, and other more current tunes.

The Lab Jazz Ensemble performance will feature standards, including Duke Ellington’s “In a Mellow Tone,” (in an arrangement performed by the Count Basie Orchestra); Bill Holman’s “The Opener,” and Dee Barton’s “Here’s That Rainy Day,” each performed by the Stan Kenton Orchestra; Dizzy Gillespie’s “Birk’s Works,” and Charles Mingus’ “Better Git Hit In Your Soul.”

Tickets for both the Vocal Jazz and Jazz Ensembles concerts are $6 for adults, $3 for seniors and students. Both will be held in Corthell Hall. Call 780-5555 for reservations.
