LEWISTON – During its annual autumn flu vaccine campaign, St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center administered 3,657 doses of flu vaccine to residents of the twin cities and Androscoggin County.
Campaign organizer Susan Olson-Gwozdz, executive director of WorkMed, said, “This is a real success story.” Three individual clinics were held for community members, and more than 1,350 people turned out to get vaccinated.
In addition to the public clinics, Olson-Gwozdz oversaw onsite clinics at businesses throughout the region. Those clinics accounted for another 2,300 individuals.
“We handled flu vaccine clinics for businesses through WorkMed, which is the occupational health service of St. Mary’s,” said Olson-Gwozdz.
“We’ve been pleased to see the enthusiasm for vaccinations throughout the community. Besides our clinics, drug stores, grocery stores and other non-traditional locations have provided space for vaccination clinics. The more people who get protected from the flu by having a vaccine means fewer sick people during the winter months and early spring, when flu is at its worst.”
While St. Mary’s has no additional public flu shot clinics scheduled for the balance of the year, businesses that would like to provide the service for their employees may contact Mona Robitaille at WorkMed: 753-3080 or e-mail [email protected] to arrange an onsite clinic.
