NORWAY – The Oxford Hills Music and Performing Arts Association will hold auditions Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 14-15, for its production of “The Glass Menagerie,” by Tennessee Williams.
Auditions will begin at 6 p.m. at the Norway Grange, 15 Whitman St. Call-backs will be on Jan. 17. There will be nine performances April 17-27.
Roles are available for two women and two men:
Tom Wingfield: in his 20s; narrator and a main character who is resentfully trapped in a life he hates and seeks escape through writing poetry and later the Merchant Marines.
Laura Wingfield: two years older than Tom; crippled with one leg shorter than the other; painfully shy and self-conscious. Withdrawn from society, she finds comfort and safety in her glass animal figurines and music records.
Amanda Wingfield: in her 40s/50s; mother of Tom and Laura; a faded Southern belle whose husband abandoned her, leaving her to raise the children alone. She spends much time pushing, arguing with and nagging Tom.
Jim O’Connor: Laura’s age; a gentleman caller Tom brings home for Laura; one of the high-school “elite” who was Laura’s only major crush in high school. Tom is able to draw Laura out of her shell but his enthusiasm leads to an upsetting of the status quo and a final confrontation between Tom and Amanda.
