Among the large and prosperous producing farms for which Androscoggin county is noted, Maple Grove Farm, Auburn, stands among the foremost. Situated about a mile and a half from the city the large and commodious buildings are seen some time before the farm is reached which may be done by the East Auburn electric line or by carriage on the old Turner road.

One afternoon recently it was the pleasure of the writer to visit this farm, where he was cordially greeted by the proprietors, Dr. John A., and Rowland Ness, who are doing an extensive business in breeding and importing Hackney and Clydesdale horses and Ayrshire cattle.

50 years ago, 1958

• BANGOR – Maine’s gross revenue from its recreational industry in 1957 was estimated today at 270 million dollars or more. This total would be a record, exceeding by 15 million the 1956 receipts from vacationers.

• First graders at the Lake Street School will be given a tour of the Auburn Savings bank operations and find out what happens to their money after it is deposited in the school savings bank. The children will see how coin sorting and coin wrapping machines operate, and they will be shown the safety deposit vault. They will be shown bills of $1,000, $500 and $100 denomination, and Government and utility company bonds.

25 years ago, 1983

• There is merit in the idea of advancing the retirement age for old age recipients who were born in 1949 or later to age 66 or 67. There is desperate need to make the Social Security system a pay-as-you-go operation. This will save the system millions of dollars at a time when fewer workers will be charged with supporting a significantly increased number of retirees.

• BAR HARBOR – Workers began Thursday to set in place a 120-foot bridge at the Canadian National Marine ferry terminal, the first step in preparing the facility to accommodate larger boats.
