Men: Sean Fry, UMF basketball
The honors and milestones continue to roll in for Fry, a senior from Jay.
Fifty-three points and two UMF wins were sufficient for North Atlantic Conference coaches to name Fry their player of the week for the third time this season.
Fry also topped 1,000 career points with 24 (and 13 rebounds) against Castleton State.
It wasn’t a bad seven days for the Beavers’ trophy case. Andrew Dean of Gorham also was named NAC rookie of the week for the second time.
Women: Alexa Kaubris, Bowdoin
This hasn’t been the brand of basketball season that seemed to be Bowdoin College’s birthright in this decade. Losing All-America Eileen Flaherty and a splendid starting backcourt to graduation was tough enough. Seeing superb sophomore Leah Rubega go down with an injury made matters worse.
Life is slowly returning to form for the Polar Bears, though, and much of the credit goes to Kaubris. The junior from Rumford converted a traditional 3-point play with one second remaining Saturday to give Bowdoin (11-4) its sixth straight victory, 54-51, over Middlebury. Kaubris finished with 13 points for Bowdoin, which trailed by double digits in the first half.
