On the Friday before Thanksgiving break, Team 73 had their annual team day. Team day was a day for the students to learn about getting along with one another and meeting new people.
On this day the team members didn’t have any classes except their study halls and art, gym, etc. That way they had the whole day to learn about one another.
The kids watched two movies that day. One showed kids of all ages and their responses to prejudice and people being treated differently. It also showed that inside we are all the same, no matter what our outsides look like. The other movie was called “A Place at the Table.” It showed how a group of kids’ ancestors had to go through a lot of suffering so they can live in the U.S. today. It also showed that we all do, see, act, and come from different places and races, but inside were all the same.
During lunch the team members did things differently. The teacher asked the kids to sit with people they regularly wouldn’t sit with. Everyone participated, even the teachers. Then when they got back, they told of their experience. The kids and teachers learned a lot of things they didn’t know about one another during that lunch.
After lunch the kids got into small groups and discussed how they can stop the mean things done and said in the bathrooms, halls, and anywhere else.
Here are some of the things the kids had to say about the day. “It was cool!” “It was interesting and fun.” And ” We all learned a lot from the mix it up lunch, and the whole day.” Miss. Poulin, the math teacher on Team 73 said ” Team day allowed students to meet other students on the team they may never have talked to before.” The history teacher, Mr. Akerley said “It was a great opportunity for the teachers to get to know the students personally.”
So that’s what team 73 did for their day. Hopefully the rest of the school will follow in their example.
