Fort program

AUGUSTA – Candle-making will be the focus of a demonstration when Old Fort Western’s First Sunday series continues from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at the fort, 16 Cony St.

Fort staff will be hand dipping tallow candles. Visitors will be invited to take a turn dipping spun wicking into the heated tallow.

Old Fort Western is open the first Sunday of every month November through May. See the calendar at www.oldfortwestern.org for the full schedule of First Sunday events.

First Sunday admission is free. A $5 donation is requested.

Nonprofit Day

AUGUSTA – The Maine Association of Nonprofits will hold the fifth annual Nonprofit Day from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in the Hall of Flags at the State House. All events are open to the public.

Family walks

FALMOUTH – Southern Maine Volkssporting Association, Maine Audubon and Falmouth Community Programs will sponsor 5K or 10K Family-Friendly Winter Walks on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 9 and 10.

The start and finish will be at Maine Audubon, 20 Gilsland Farm Road. Start time will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a finish time of 4 p.m.

Open house

BATH – Bath Regional Vocational Center will hold an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12. Students will demonstrate their skill in automotive, carpentry, health science, computer tech, culinary arts, child care, design technologies, business/MOUS.

There will also be a raffle and a career fair and a college fair. Free on-site daycare will be provided by the child care program. Snow date will be Wednesday, Feb. 13.

Need volunteers

PORTLAND – The University of Southern Maine’s College of Nursing and Health Professions is launching a study led by Associate Professor of Exercise Health and Sports Sciences Janet Whately Blum examining the effects of calcium on dieting women.

USM is looking for pre-menopausal women between the ages of 21 to 45; need to lose between 30 to 60 pounds; are not using birth control; and are not dieting or participating in regular exercise.

Participants must be nonsmokers in good health with normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels, who are not diabetic or lactose intolerant. Participants need to be willing to follow a diet for 25 weeks and attend weekly meetings for the first 12 weeks, then bi-weekly meeting for the next 13 weeks at USM.
