FARMINGTON – Contributions for the United Way of the Tri-Valley Area have exceeded the campaign’s goal this year.
As of Friday morning, donations had risen to $404,000, surpassing the $395,000 goal, Executive Director Nancy Morgan said.
“Many businesses increased their contributions from last year with four reaching 100 percent for employee participation,” she said. “It’s not always the dollar amount, but when everyone gives it makes it a lot easier.”
Awards for different participation levels were given out Tuesday at the organization’s annual meeting at the University of Maine at Farmington.
Verso Paper of Jay employees raised more than $88,000 and SW&B Construction employees who work at the mill raised $12,000, she said, bringing the total donation to more than $100,000.
Some other noted contributors included Franklin Community Health Network, Work First, Farmington Ford and Jarden Home Brands.
Several organizations and businesses were also recognized for increasing their donations. New campaigns were held this year at Downeast Energy of Mt. Vernon, E.L. Vining, Notify MD and the Original Irregular, she said.
Volunteers of the year, Paul and Emily Floyd, were recognized for all they do and how much they have given, Morgan said. Paul was one of the founding fathers of the United Way when it started to organize in 1979 and came into existence in 1980.
“They love to be involved although they aren’t always front and center when they do it…but they give so much,” Morgan said.
Officers elected for 2008 include President Janis Walker, Vice President Tom Taylor, Treasurer Bob Yorks and Secretary Peggy Willihan.
With more contributions than expected, Morgan said some United Way agencies will receive a little more funding this year and some will be set aside for heating assistance. The extra will be given to Western Maine Community Action for people above the poverty line who are not eligible for some heating assistance programs, she said.
