DURHAM – Looking at the 119 people crammed into the fire station meeting room Sunday afternoon, caucus convener Mitch Thomas asked, “Does anyone have an extra notebook? The last time we had a caucus we had one quarter this many people. We ordered the same number of forms as four years ago, and today we ran out in 10 minutes.”

Then they found some plain sheets of paper, numbered them and handed them out with instructions on what information was needed.

Then they ran out of plain paper and put out the notebook. Every seat was filled, and it wasn’t just standing room only – there wasn’t any floor space left, with people were leaning against all four walls.

At 2 p.m., he finally called the caucus to order, listed the rules, “no heckling, foul language…,” but the meeting was cordial and friendly.

When all was said and done, the vote was nearly evenly split, and counting the nine absentee ballots it was 63 for Obama and 61 for Clinton and one uncommitted.

Durham has 8 delegates to the State Convention in May, and under caucus rules the delegates will be divided evenly, with each candidate getting four.
