GREENE – Democratic caucus participants here issued a set of marching orders to their party’s standard bearer – be it Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.
Meeting Sunday afternoon at the Town Office, the 85 caucus members unanimously adopted resolutions calling on Clinton or Obama to:
• Cease and halt the use of land mines and cluster bombs by the U.S. military or the CIA;
• Stop the U.S. military and CIA from using torture to extract information from captives;
• End the practice of rendition, where the U.S. will send a prisoner to a third country for interrogation;
• Close the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba;
• Support free, easy e-mail;
• Pledge to veto any legislation that would interfere with the town’s ability to receive Channel 7 television programming, a motion brought by Town Clerk Sally Hebert; and
• Called on the Democratic National Committee to halt the use of so-called “super delegates” – party officials who aren’t required to support a candidate along state voting lines.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Jim Nesbitt, 85, one of those taking part in the caucus.
Nesbitt said the caucus largely resembled a town meeting in that participants were encouraged to talk and ask questions before standing for a candidate. And, he said, supporters of candidates were grilled by those at the caucus before even being allowed to offer a stump speech.
Clinton carried the day in Greene, pulling 58 votes to Obama’s 33.
