DIXFIELD – The nearly 6 feet of snow that has fallen here already this winter is taking a toll on the town’s coffers.
Town Manager Tom Richmond said Tuesday afternoon that selectmen on Monday approved spending thousands of dollars to handle snow and to buy more sand and salt.
“We have enough salt for one more storm, and we’re running out of room for the snow,” he said.
He said at least a couple of days of work, at $90 an hour, will be needed by a private contractor to pile the snow higher at the snow dump on Park Avenue on land owned by Irving Forest Products.
The road account will likely end up several thousand dollars over budget.
“When I planned the budget last year, no one anticipated this kind of winter,” Richmond said.
He’s not sure how much more money will be needed – that depends on how many more storms there are – but additional sand and salt are being ordered. He said the extra money for it will come from the town’s undesignated surplus. He said the town could use as much as $45,000 from surplus for the rest of the winter’s needs, but he doesn’t expect to use anywhere near that much.
In other matters Monday, the board tabled action on the repair and renovation of bleachers at the football field until a special town meeting is held.
Richmond said $4,000 to $5,000 will be needed to build handrails and to make the bleachers handicapped accessible.
The money may come from the Ione Harlow Fund, which requires public approval.
A 50-minute closed session to discuss a personnel matter in the town office was held after the regular meeting. No details were provided and no decisions were made, Richmond said.
