LEWISTON – Money for a Kennedy Park pool house and play area, a stage in Railroad Park, fire equipment and building repairs will get special scrutiny from city councilors.
“These things should all be worked into our budget discussions and not spent until we’ve looked them over,” Councilor Tom Peters said.
Councilors asked for a list of projects approved by previous councils that haven’t been funded yet. City Administrator Jim Bennett responded Tuesday with a list of 59 projects totaling $8 million.
The list included $267,895 for a new pool house in Kennedy Park, approved by councilors last year. It would be the last piece of renovations there that began with construction of a skate park, new basketball courts and a children’s splash area.
The list also includes $20,000 for a stage, pavers and trash receptacles at Railroad Park, money for housing projects, books, furniture and heating controls at the Lewiston Public Library and window replacements, floor replacements and other work at city buildings.
“We probably gave you more of a list than you were expecting,” Bennett said. “We included everything we could think of just to make it inclusive.”
He suggested scheduling a workshop meeting to review the entire list.
“We plan on giving you a list of all available funds from every account in the city so you can have a better picture of where we stand,” he said.
Councilors did agree to let the city spend road project money that is being matched by the state. Some of those projects are scheduled to begin this spring, including a Main Street traffic study, work on Russell Street, work on Sabattus, Laurier and Russell streets and intersection work at Pond Road and Webster Street.
