Waste disposal
Issue: The town routinely contracts with a private firm for the disposal of solid waste.
Scoop: The council voted to enter a new five-year contract with Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. of Auburn for $74.34 per ton for the first year, to be readjusted to the Consumer Price Index each year at a minimum of 2 percent with a 4 percent cap.
Victualer’s license
Issue: Whenever a business that requires a local license/permit changes ownership, a new one is required.
Scoop: After a public hearing, Sandra Harkins, the new owner of the Railroad Restaurant and Pub, was granted a victualer’s license.
Budgets reviewed
Issue: Work on various department budgets for the 2008-09 fiscal year is under way.
Scoop: Councilors reviewed proposed budgets for public works, fire department, solid waste and a proposed new technology budget for long-term improvements. They also reviewed finance department revenues and expenditures.
Economic director
Issue: An executive session was held to discuss a personnel issue and town managers goals; and hiring a new Economic Development Director.
Scoop: Town Manager Stephen Eldridge reported that one of the four finalists for that position had dropped out after accepting a position with another community.
