AUGUSTA (AP) – A report released by a study panel shows persistent weaknesses in Maine’s economy in the areas of income, transportation costs and taxes.
The Maine Economic Growth Council’s report on Tuesday also issues “red flags” for other drags on the state’s economy including energy and health care costs.
But it hands out “gold stars” for the state’s effort to conserve land and promote sustainable forestry, expand health insurance and create new businesses.
The council includes representatives of state businesses, government, colleges and policy advocates.
The council’s report says Mainers’ per capita income in 2006 was just under $32,000, nearly $4,700 under the national figure and the 39th highest in the nation.
