LEWISTON – Lewiston Adult Education is offering an array of classes, tours and workshops celebrating the arrival of spring.

Residents are invited to join Susan Hayward of Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary in “Wildflowers of Maine” to study basic botany, field guide use skills, horticulture and conservation of native plants.

The latter portion of the 12-week course is comprised of field trips to a variety of local habitats, including riverbanks, meadows, wetlands, bogs and forested areas. Though the course will focus primarily on spring wildflowers, nature enthusiasts will finish the course with the skills to begin identifying summer and fall flora as well. The class will meet from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Thursdays beginning March 20.

Two tours have also been scheduled in honor of the rising thermometer. In the first tour, “Tea Time Treasures,” participants will journey to the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunkport, followed by shopping and a chance for lunch at Alison’s Restaurant at Dock Square.

From there travelers will visit the Meadows Inn for an afternoon of fine linens and china, treats, and loose-leaf tea served the old-fashioned way. The tour will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, March 28.

The second trip, “A Walking Tour of Lewiston’s Mill District,” will highlight the significance of the Bates Mill in community history. The tour will begin at Museum L/A and the Bates Mill Building 5, then proceed to the canal system to learn about how imports and exports were moved using waterways and train, and finish with a stop at the Maine Heritage Weavers. The tour will take place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 3.

Lewiston Adult Education is also offering a number of one-day workshops to help people get ready for their spring home, garden and craft projects.

“Welcome Spring! Dried Wreathmaking,” taught by Laurie Ouellette, owner and primary designer at Sweet Pea Designs, will teach participants how to arrange their own six-inch wreath filled with silk and dried selections. The workshop will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, March 4.

In “Traditional Greek Easter Treats” students will learn how to prepare Easter favorites, including lambropsomo, a braided sweet bread; koulourakia, a twisted shortbread cookie; and galaktobouriko, a layered custard dessert. It will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 13.

“Edible Landscaping” is an option for anyone looking for an alternative to conventional residential landscaping using food-producing plants, whether they have an acre or a patio. Learn gardening techniques for the plants, It will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 3.

“May Basket Floral Arrangement,” taught by Laurie Reynolds from Blossoms of Windham, will teach participants how to create a basket filled with dried and silk selections and embellished with the colors of spring. The arrangements will be ready just in time for May Day and Mother’s Day. Class will meet from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 30.

Students in “Hands-On Hardscaping” will meet at the business of instructor Mark Labonte to get firsthand experience with the planning and implementation of a hardscaping project. They will have the chance to try their hand at installing walkways, patios and retaining walls. The workshop will meet from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 3.
