FARMINGTON – A Farmington man who led police on a chase Monday is being held without bail on a probation revocation charge after appearing in 12th District Court on Tuesday.

Thomas Cook, 27, was also ordered held on $2,000 cash bail for the new charges, but Judge Charles Dow said the bail was a moot point in light of the probation charge.

Cook, who was sentenced last week to 364 days in jail with all but 30 days suspended, was released after asking for a stay on the 30 days so he could have carpal tunnel surgery.

On Monday, Farmington police officer Ed Hastings attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Cook at 2:30 p.m. for a traffic violation on Fairbanks Road near Jack’s Trading Post. He refused to stop and proceeded to drive down Town Farm Road, turned on to Marvel Street and into Twin Birches Lane, Hastings said.

The vehicle was reported to have been traveling 75 to 90 mph in a 45 mph zone, Assistant District Attorney Andrew Robinson told the court Tuesday.

After stopping the vehicle, Cook ran into the woods and was found and arrested 45 minutes later by Detective Thomas White of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department on Temple Road, which is Route 43.

Cook was arrested on charges of eluding an officer, aggravated driving after suspension as a habitual offender and driving to endanger. He also faces a charge of possession of the schedule drug methadone.

Passengers with Cook were Catherine Giles, 38, and Victor Oliver, 23, both of Farmington. Both ran from the vehicle but were not arrested, Hastings said.

Attorney Walter Hanstein asked the court for a one-day bail with a $50,000 surety to allow Cook to have the surgery next week. The judge denied the request.

Previously, Robinson told the court that Cook had 25 convictions since 1999.

A police dog was called in to help track Cook, Hastings said, and officers from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Wilton and the University of Maine as well as a Maine Drug Enforcement Agent helped the Farmington Police Department Monday, Hastings said.
