JAY – High school students will be learning to swing dance Friday before that evening’s Spring Fling, with live music provided by the Three Button Deluxe Band.
The community is invited to join the fun and relive the 1930s era in semiformal attire from 7 to 10 p.m. at the high school. Admission is $3 per person or $5 a couple.
When teacher Kristel Anuszewski taught some of her students last year about swing dance, she said, “They loved it.” She started thinking that it would be cool if all the high school students could learn to swing dance.
Among the most popular swing-style dances are Lindy Hop, Charleston and Jitterbug.
Anuszewski said school Principal John Robinson told staff during their first meeting this school year that the Oak Grove Foundation is offering grants for educational endeavors in schools.
She sought a grant and was awarded $1,000. The school’s drama program is putting in the additional $700 for swing project.
Anuszewski said she asked fellow teachers to put together theme classes to go along with the day and some have agreed.
Professional dance instructors Keith Haevrnin and Donna Foster will teach students in grade levels during the day.
“Some kids are excited about trying to get costuming of the 1930s,” Anuszewski said.
