PARIS – The Friends of Little Home will sponsor the second annual Jump Rope-A-Thon. Oxford Hills Comprehensive Hill School sophomores Kate Michaud, 15, of Norway and Andy Churchill, 15, of Harrison will run the event from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 6, at Oxford Hills Elementary School, South Paris.
The proceeds will go to the Friends of Little Field Home, a nonprofit organization based out of Hebron, whose assistance have provided the resources necessary for the Little Field Home orphanage and medical clinic in Malawi, Africa, to operate.
“I want to help the Little Field Home because it’s really important to help outside your community and there are real people around the world who need our help,” said Michaud.
The money raised from last year’s event helped pay for the construction and purchasing of medicine for the medical clinic.
Churchill, who himself was adopted from an orphanage in Russia, has a special place in his heart for the orphans in Malawi. “I first became attached to this orphanage when I realized how little these wonderful kids had. I see their photos and they look free and happy. They live without any fabrications, and all they have is each other, and it’s beautiful.”
This year Michaud and Churchill hope the money raised will go to buying an ambulance to transport patents to the large emergency hospital 40 miles away. Presently, a bicycle is the only means of transportation.
It is hoped to have one person jumping rope in a team for the whole three hours of the event. Prizes will be given, including handmade Malawian jewelry.
Anyone from the community can join a team when they arrive. “Last year we mixed it up with several jump rope contests and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun,” said Michaud. People of all ages are welcome.
