WOODSTOCK – With only one of 49 articles defeated during Monday’s annual town meeting, the 80 voters who attended approved a $1,063,727 municipal budget for 2008.

Town Manager Vern Maxfield noted, however, that the amount does not include an estimated $920,000 for the town’s share of SAD 44 education costs, $103,239 for Oxford County or $10,000 in overlay.

After those figures are included and $449,050 is deducted through revenues and surplus to reduce the tax commitment, the final amount to be collected through property taxes is $1,623,760, up $54,873 from this year.

The one defeated article pertained to a proposed pay-per-bag solid waste disposal program.

“There was a lot of discussion generated as to pay per bag as I had expected, and I was not surprised when the idea was turned down. There were 12 people in favor, but the vast majority said no to its passage,” Maxfield said after the meeting.

“This has been one of the smoothest town meetings we have had.” he added. “It was for the most part cut and dried with little discussion, lasting only about two hours.”

Other than budget issues, a property maintenance ordinance, a tax-acquired property ordinance, and an appeals board ordinance were OK’d.

The 2008 municipal elections were held, with Selectman Bruce Korhonen re-elected to a second three-year term. He was opposed by Percy McInnis, who received 11 votes to Korhonen’s 34.

For SAD 44, director Marcel Polak was re-elected to another three-year term. Opposition came again from McInnis, but the vote tally was 38 for Polak and one for McInnis.

Unopposed for seats as Whitman Memorial Library trustees, Edward Howe and Sonja Davis both received three-year terms. For Howe it is his first and for Davis her second.

The meeting was moderated by Steve Wight of Newry.
