SOUTH PORTLAND (AP) – Gov. John Baldacci presented state medals to a dozen former prisoners of war in a South Portland ceremony marking Former POW/MIA Recognition Day.
The veterans, who served in World War II, Korea or Vietnam, received Maine Silver Star Honorable Service Medals on Wednesday at the new Maine Military Museum and Learning Center.
Baldacci told the ex-POWs that they know “all too well the meaning of sacrifice and of service.” He said the medal was a way for Maine citizens to express their appreciation.
The governor has presented dozens of Maine Silver Star medals since August 2006 to recognize veterans who have been wounded or held captive during overseas conflicts. The medal is not to be confused with the Silver Star, the nation’s third-highest award for gallantry by members of the armed forces.
