LEWISTON – The Maine Arts Commission is asking professional artists who live or work in Maine to submit proposals to design, execute and install artwork at the University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston-Auburn College, a Percent for Art site.

All professional artists who live or work in Maine may apply for consideration for this project at the L-A College established 20 years ago. Preference will be given to Maine residents.

The deadline for submissions is May 30.

Maine’s Percent for Art law reserves 1 percent of the construction funds for all state-funded building projects to provide artwork for the public areas of these buildings.

About $30,000 will be used to commission work(s) from one or many artists. An artist’s budget proposal must cover all design, fabrication, transportation, documentation and installation expenses, including any building or site modification associated with the artwork.

A Percent for Art selection committee will jury submissions. It will review the submitted preliminary materials, including digital images, the artist’s resume, an initial proposal and an estimated budget. Do not submit detailed models, drawings or final proposals for this first-round. Artists selected for the second round will receive a design fee for refining their proposals. Final proposals will include detailed models, drawings, samples and an interview with the committee.

Anyone with specific questions about architectural elements should contact Jon Boyd, AIA, at jboyd@harriman.com. Percent for Art questions can be directed to Kerstin Gilg, public art associate, at kerstin.gilg@maine.gov or by calling 287-6719. Questions about the L-A College campus or scheduling a site visit should be directed to Robyn Holman (holman@usm.maine.edu) or Jan Phillips (janannep@usm.maine.edu).
