PORTLAND (AP) – The Henrietta Goodall Hospital in Sanford has paid more than $1 million to settle a civil case with the federal government for improperly billing the Medicare program.

According to prosecutors, the government alleged that the hospital overcharged Medicare by $892,000 for various chemotherapy services and for three types of drugs used by breast cancer and heart attack patients and in chemotherapy.

The government alleged that at the time of the billings in 2003 and 2004, the hospital’s management knew or should have known the billings were improper because former employees had pointed out irregularities.

The U.S. attorney’s office says Goodall has paid $1.15 million to satisfy any outstanding claims.
