Lisbon Town Council

Met: Tuesday

Issue: What to do with the former Lisbon Falls High School on Campus Avenue, circa 1905, now that it has outlived its usefulness as a school has been a lingering question in the minds of residents. Since it was entered on the National Register of Historic Places last year, there has been talk that the stately two-and-one-half-story brick building might be used in a number of ways that will keep the original character of the facility intact. It was last used as a high school in 1952, later an elementary school and most recently housed School Union 30’s central office.

Scoop: Town Manager Steve Eldridge reported that WRE Commercial Brokers of Portland has been selected to market the building for reuse that will be in keeping with the National Historic site designation. The asking price has not been determined.

Scoop: Theresa Mahout has been hired to fill a part-time vacancy as a counter clerk in the tax office.

Scoop: Eldridge reported that the finance director is proposing approximately $72,000 in year-end transfers be made among various accounts for the purpose of balancing them.

Issue: Councilors heard a proposal by Frank Hogan to operate a hot dog cart near the parking lot at the entrance to the Paper Mill Trail on Frost Hill Avenue.

No action was taken.

Approved: Following public hearings the council approved the renewal of Liquor and Victualer’s Licenses for Casa Mia Inc. d/b/a Graziano’s Restaurant; and a Pawnbroker License for Jim’s Trading Center.

Upcoming: Special Town Council meeting, 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, at the town office on the proposed municipal budget.

Public hearing: 7 p.m. Monday, April 28, at the Lisbon Community School on the full 2008-09 town and school budgets.
