FRYEBURG – Oxford County commissioners voted Tuesday to send a Stoneham tax abatement issue to the Oxford County Board of Review. The matter was remanded to commissioners by Oxford County Superior Court.
Commissioner Steve Merrill said the board had the choice of rewriting the decision, rehearing it, or sending it to the review board. He said one of the commissioners on the board when the matter was presented is no longer serving and that it would be unfair to rehear it.
“For fair play, that’s really the way to go,” said Merrill.
The abatement cropped up in 2005 when two households in the Harding Hill subdivision applied for an abatement to commissioners, since Stoneham has no appeals board.
In 2007, the Board of Review denied an abatement to 12 households on Harding Hill that requested abatements.
Also on Tuesday, commissioners appointed Roger Whitehouse of Peru to serve on the Board of Review.
