LEWISTON – When Erica Morin gets on base, she’s got one thing in mind.

So when the Lewiston junior reached on an infield hit in the first inning Friday, her intention was to turn that simple hit into something greater.

“That’s my goal every game,” said Morin. “I want to get on base and score. If I’m quick enough, they get errors because they freak out.”

Morin’s baserunning forced a pair of Oxford Hills errors in the first inning, and Lewiston built the early lead. The Blue Devils rode that momentum to a 5-1 win while the early miscues set the tone for the Vikings’ day.

“We really are not good enough to be able to make that many errors, and we make numerous errors,” said Oxford Hills coach Cindy Goddard. “It’s the little things that we do, and we shoot ourselves in the foot. We give it to them. They deserved it because it was 5-1 today, but we give them the momentum to do that. We don’t help ourselves.”

Lewiston (9-2) beat Oxford Hills (7-4) the first time 12-3. The Vikings had five errors in that game and duplicated that feat Friday. Three of Lewiston’s runs were unearned. Viking hurler Kristy Jurczak only gave up five hits and struck out eight.

“We were really strong mentally to play,” said Lewiston coach Fred Royer. “Offensively, we really executed some good baserunning and some key clutch hitting. I thought our defense was really solid behind a fine pitching performance by Danielle (Willey).”

Willey only allowed three hits and walked just two. She struck out four. The Blue Devils also got fine plays in the field. Morin made a sensational backhanded catch in center to end the game. Sam Morency gobbled up everything at short while Lyndsay Smith at first, Carly Denis at second, Courtney Vallee at third and catcher Maria Labbe all made nice plays in the field.

“Lewiston played well,” said Goddard. “I don’t think they made any defensive errors. Their shortstop made some nice plays. She covered a lot of territory.”

When Morin got her infield hit with one out in the first, she immediately raced for second when she had the chance. She drew an errant throw. While on her way to third, another bad throw gave her a free pass home for the 1-0 lead.

“I had no idea I was going to get home,” said Morin. “I didn’t know they were going to make two errors in a row.”

Labbe followed with a hard hit to left that skipped past the outfielder for a home run and 2-0 lead.

The Vikings got one back in the second when Jaidyn Rice singled home Brooke Ladd. Willey and Labbe teamed up to make a nice play at the plate to get Emmylou Blake for the second out to limit the threat. Mindy Rugg, Blake and Rice had the only hits for the Vikings.

In the third, Morin struck again. The younger sister of Lewiston softball standouts Katie and Allie Morin singled in Denis for a 3-1 lead.

“I haven’t been getting good hits lately,” said Morin. “When we went into the game, I knew that I wanted to hit good after having a bad season the first half of the season. So I was pumped that I got a hit.”

Lewiston added to the lead in the fourth when Willey scored on an error on a Patricia DeFosse grounder. Willey then plated Morency was a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
