AUBURN – For once, the water across the brows of the St. Dom’s lacrosse faithful wasn’t sweat, but rain.

The Saints jumped out to an early lead and ran away with an 11-4 win over visiting Fryeburg on Tuesday, a rare blowout in what has been a season full of close calls and near-misses.

“It’s nice to finally come out and get a good effort from start to finish,” St. Dom’s coach Jim Dock said. “We were able to play some players who normally don’t see a lot of time, too. We want to get them some varsity experience, and the other thing is we have a game (Wednesday).”

Trevar Haefele was the top scorer on the day for St. Dom’s with three goals and three assists, while Matt Adams returned to the lineup to add three of his own and Matt Barlion contributed a pair, pushing the Saints above the .500 mark at 4-3.

“We really spread it out today, and it allowed us time to catch our passes and move in space,” Haefele said.

Haefele, Adams and the rest of the St. Dom’s offense took advantage on several fast break chances, many times catching the Raiders’ defense off guard.

“When we pushed the play, they were a bit slower to react,” Haefele said. “We were able to push the play.”

“I’m pleased with the way we played against these guys, to be honest,” Fryeburg coach Steve Graustein said. “They’re better than us, but we played a good game against them.”

Despite the 11 goals, Fryeburg keeper Marc Schwalbenberg was a rock in the cage for the Raiders (1-6), turning back 22 shots as the Saints peppered the cage with 51 attempts.

“Their keeper is incredible,” Dock said. “He’s just an outstanding player. He carries a lot of weight on his shoulders, and he does an outstanding job.”

“He had a great game in goal, and I think Dan Rounds had an outstanding game on defense,” Graustein said.

The Saints got on the board on Adams’ first early in the opening quarter, but the Raiders evened things up quickly, thanks to Stephen Lansing.

Matt Adams, Haefele and Ben Adams closed out the first quarter with three goals to put the host team up by three.

An early goal in the second by Fryeburg’s Ryan Ahern cut into the Saints’ lead, but Jon Mulderig and Barlion squelched any thoughts of a comeback.

St. Dom’s netted three unanswered in the third to run its lead to 9-2, and traded a pair in the fourth to cap the scoring.
