Maine Catholics should thank Michael Heath, executive director of the Christian Civic League, and his supporters for their efforts to protect our families.

Heath was quoted recently, as a Sun Journal guest columnist (May 11), “We are convinced that the gay rights movement is based on the flawed premise that homosexual acts, and social relationships based on homosexuality, are ethical and normal.”

According to the teachings of the Catholic Church, Heath and his supporters are correct about the flawed premise of the gay rights movement. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1997, “Tradition has always declared that homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered. They are contrary to the natural law. Homosexual persons must be accepted with respect, compassion and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided,” but “Under no circumstances can (homosexual acts) be approved.”
