NORWAY – Russ Newcomb, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, recently announced his candidacy for the Maine House of Representatives from District 95, representing the towns of Greenwood, Norway, Waterford and West Paris.

Newcomb has served as a selectman for the past eight years and has one year remaining in his third three-year term. For the past six of those years he served on the Oxford County Budget Advisory Committee, having been elected by his peers in District One of Oxford County. Before being elected selectman, Newcomb served on the road and budget committees for the town.

“I feel that all of the experiences in both town government as well as at the county level will be a great asset in going to Augusta,” Newcomb stated. “There are many of the same issues, though on a larger scale to deal with. Of course taxes and the availability of affordable health care are on everyone’s mind. As a selectman, I have seen how hard it is to keep our local volunteer fire departments fully staffed and available on a 24 hour basis. There needs to be a way to make it easier for the departments to meet the safety standards and training that is required. This is an example of the issues I would address in the Legislature.”

Newcomb has always lived in Norway, graduating from Oxford Hills High School in 1975, marrying his wife, Shelley, and raising two daughters who still live and work in the area. Russ has owned his own snow plowing and auto repair business for over 25 years as well as working for Allen’s Auto Sales for the past 15 years.

“Having worked for a dealership with such a great reputation and customer service is another thing that should help me deal with the wide variety of people in my district,” said Newcomb. “Having such an understanding employer who is concerned about the issues in the area has made it possible to be a public servant while still maintaining a job. I want to go to Augusta and relate to members on both sides of the aisle to solve problems and make the towns I represent a better place to live, work and play. I have always been hardworking and honest and pledge to serve the interests of the constituents of District 95.”

Newcomb said he welcomes help on his campaign. He can be reached at 743-5699 or by e-mail, [email protected].
