In a match that likely determined home-court advantage in the Western Class C semifinal round of next week’s tournament, Dirigo swept Winthrop Tuesday.
Kaile Underwood prevailed in a tight match at the top singles position, upending Top-40 singles qualifier Nick Ochtman 7-6 (5), 6-4.
In another tight match, Kyle Hutchinson and Peter Neverette of Dirigo defeated Natkamol Kaewpunna and Nate Blanchard, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
Undefeated again
The Lewiston girls and boys wrapped up another pair of unbeaten seasons Tuesday, both beating Mt. Ararat. The girls won all of their matches by at least 4-1 margins, while the boys narrowly defeated Mt. Ararat, 3-2, twice.
Lewiston’s teams will head to Bangor Wednesday to square off against the Rams in a quasi-meaningless KVAC title match between the teams that finished 1-2 in the standings. It will be the only meeting of the season for the two schools, unless they meet in the Eastern Maine finals.
Speaking of undefeated
Mountain Valley’s boys’ team completed the clean sweep in the MVC this season, finishing off winless Carrabec Tuesday in quick fashion.
Curtis Bolduc and Brian Germain didn’t drop a game at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, and the doubles teams of Tyson Hanson and Ernie Mathews, and Brandon Carver and Lonnie Labonte lost a combined three games.
No. 1 singles player Travis Ruff had the goughest day, needing a 6-4, 6-2 score to win his match.
Coin flip?
It’s been a possibility all season, but as the games start to dwindle, it looks more and more like Lewiston and Brunswick could use a coin flip to determine the No. 1 seed in Eastern A. The schedule for each team was identical, and if both teams win out, their lone loss would be to each other and their Heal Points total the same number. According to MPA guidelines, “All other ties will be resolved by looking first at head-to-headcompetition results and second, if the tie is unresolved, by a flip of a coin.”
