PORTLAND – Maine Association of Nonprofits honored three Maine organizations as leaders in nonprofit excellence at the annual conference on May 8.
Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice in Lewiston, Tedford Housing in Brunswick and Gibbs Library in Washington all received $3,000 as the winners of the Dirigo Award for Nonprofit Excellence.
The awards are given to one large, medium and small nonprofit that has achieved significant results by utilizing ingenuity combined with sound management in 11 practices: governance and leadership, planning, financial management, human resources, public policy and advocacy, information technology, transparency and accountability, communication, strategic alliance, fundraising and evaluation.
The award for a large nonprofit went to Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, an organization that demonstrated an extraordinary ability to adapt in light of the tenuous funding environment in which they operate, according to the association.
Tedford Housing was awarded the medium-size nonprofit award for its progressive approach to advocacy and commitment to building strategic alliances’ to further its mission.
The small nonprofit award went to Gibbs Library. Despite not having a single paid employee or any funding from the town, the library has a Web site, diverse programming and transparency.
“The three award winners represent excellent examples of organization that are adapting to the challenging funding environment currently facing nonprofits,” said Scott Schnapp, association executive director. “They utilize innovation and ingenuity to achieve a greater mission impact.”
