BRUNSWICK – Spectrum Generations, the central Maine area agency on aging, delivers Meals on Wheels to homebound and isolated seniors and disabled adults in Sagadahoc County, Brunswick and Harpswell.

Recent increases in gas prices have affected meal delivery.

“Our volunteers are offered mileage reimbursement, though many choose to donate their mileage,” said Debbie Atwood, nutrition coordinator. “However, even the most generous volunteer has to be realistic about the cost of driving to deliver several meals.”

Atwood took the opportunity recently to deliver a few local meals by bike. “With the amazing group of volunteers I have, I generally don’t have a chance to deliver meals. I commute to work by bike and when I realized that these four meals needed to go to consumers in the vicinity of the office, I grabbed my bike and headed out. They were surprised to see me arrive with a meal in hand and a helmet on my head,” she said.
