RUMFORD – Selectmen are holding a series of meetings Thursday beginning with a closed session at 5 p.m., followed by a public hearing that could lead to joint management of the town, then wrap up with nearly two dozen items on the regular meeting agenda.
The public hearing, set for 6 p.m., will give people a chance to learn about and comment on a proposed change to the Municipal Charter that would allow one person to manage both Mexico and Rumford.
Pending voter approval in July, the board supports allowing John Madigan, Mexico’s town manager and a past Rumford town manager, to serve both towns.
Tentative plans include Madigan working toward merging or regionalizing some of the departments of both towns if he is allowed to serve in such a capacity.
The charter requires full-time hours from its town manager now. If the amendment is approved, town manager’s availability would be determined by selectmen.
The 5 p.m. meeting, to be held behind closed doors, will be held with the town auditor who will present the annual management letter. The board is also expected to set the salary for Len Greaney, who was hired as interim town manager earlier in the week.
Among the regular board meeting agenda items, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., is one calling for the appointment of a new economic development committee.
Committee leader Phil Blampied held an informational meeting on Monday with more than a dozen people who may be interested in serving.
The board is also expected to appoint someone to serve a one-year term on the SAD 43 committee, act on a request to place Betsy Ross flags on the town’s war memorials, and appoint a new member to the Northern Oxford Regional Solid Waste board.
Also, Bob Stickney will make a presentation on plans by the Polar Bear Snowmobile Club to build a clubhouse on land adjacent to the Androscoggin River, and Parks Department Superintendent Tim Gallant will update the town on Project Canopy.
With the Municipal Building renovation project virtually complete, the board will also discuss, and possibly approve, a Municipal Auditorium rental policy.
Prior to the project, a maximum of 49 people were allowed in the auditorium. Now, several hundred will be allowed.
