Road woes

Issue: Ben’s Hill Road residents want the town to acquire and maintain the road. But municipal officials say upkeep of the road was discontinued, although when and why is not certain, and residents would have to get it into shape before the town would agree to again maintain it.

Up next: Codes Enforcement Officer Richard Behr and Town Manager Greg Gill will research the matter.

Trash bins

Issue: The Sabattus Pond Watershed Partnership wants to place trash bins in several locations around the pond and would like the public works department to empty them weekly. According to the partnership’s Brian Luongo, the bins would be positioned near the public access ramp and on Riley Road, near the pump house, after the Maine Department of Transportation finishes work on a nearby section of Sabattus Street.

Up next: Board members approved the bins and charged Gill with researching the cost of refuse pickup disposal.

Three contracts awarded

The scoop: Two bids were submitted regarding grading and paving of Marsh and Sutherland Pond roads, as well as Terry Circle. Board members awarded the contract to Harry C. Crooker and Sons of Topsham, whose bid of $295,637 was the lower.

Also Tuesday, board members awarded the $16,000 contract for a 231-foot concrete retaining wall at the Transfer Station to Crowley Concrete of Lewiston. Four companies were notified but Crowley’s was the only bid received for the project.

Board members approved a bid from New England Networking in Auburn to install and warranty three new computers for the town hall’s front office. The bid of $3,080 was the lowest of three received. Town Hall will be closed on Tuesday, July 1, for network maintenance and installation of the new machines.

Meetings rescheduled

The scoop: Selectmen unanimously agreed to reschedule next month’s meetings to July 8 and 22.

Plenty of notice

The scoop: Selectman Gino Camardese informed fellow board members that he will be resigning in November; he is relocating with his family to Greene. By submitting his resignation in advance, Camardese hopes his to-be-vacant seat will be filled during the regular federal, state and local election on Nov. 4.
