OXFORD – While last Thursday night may have been the Late Models’ chance in the spotlight, all eyes were on a popular support division Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway.

Mike Short and Tommy Tompkins both earned feature wins on a nearly perfect night for racing. Short became the fifth different driver to record two wins this season. The Auburn driver took the lead from Sumner Sessions on Lap 4 and pulled away to a convincing victory in the makeup race from June 28. Kim Tripp passed Sessions mid-race and hung on for second, while Sessions settled for third. Glenn Henderson came from sixth on the grid to claim fourth at the line, while multi-time Oxford champion Larry Emerson completed the top five.

“I didn’t mean to get into Sumner like that right at the beginning, he held onto it and I’m glad to see that. It’s great to pick up another one tonight, the car ran good once I got out front and with no cautions it was smooth sailing.”

Eleven of the 14 starters finished on the lead lap, while Short’s margin of victory was just more than three seconds.

Kurt Hewins, Adam Polvinen, Deanna Bisbee, David Childs and Max Zackem were also feature winners.

Tompkins earned his third victory in four starts in the nightcap. The driver from Dixfield passed Zach Emerson on Lap 12 and survived one restart and a late-race charge from Mike Short to post the win. Kim Tripp took third while Zach and Larry Emerson finished fourth and fifth respectively.

“I really had to run the bottom to hold off Shorty,” said Tompkins. My crew reminded me before the race the car takes a few laps to get going, I remembered that and just tried to protect my line once I got out front.”

In earlier feature action, Bisbee dominated a 20-lap tilt for the Ladies division that went caution-free. The South Paris driver started on the pole and never gave her competition a chance, as her Lincoln Continental-bodied machine was on a rail. Christina Spaulding took advantage of a late-race bobble by Debbie Marston to secure second at the finish, while Marston somehow hung on for third. Point leader Dottie Patria settled for fourth, while Vanna Brackett completed the top five.

Zackem held off Bob Weymouth to pick up his first-ever victory at Oxford for the NELCAR Legends division. The driver from Preston, CT, had his hands full keeping Weymouth at bay, but was just fast enough to secure the win. Terry Kirk put in a solid performance to claim third at the line in this caution-free affair for the Legends cars.

Childs came out on top of an exciting battle for the Chimney Tech Outlaw division. The Oxford driver took the lead from Rick Spaulding on Lap 8 and hung on for top honors. Zach Bowie came all the way from 15th on the grid to claim second, while Nik Coates barely edged Rick Spaulding at the line for third. Steve Moon completed the top five in a race slowed by two cautions for minor incidents.

Hewins picked up his first Late Model feature victory of the season in a wild 40-lap battle. He passed Dennis Spencer on Lap 27 and held off a hard-charging Ricky Rolfe for top honors. Rolfe said he is always happy with a top three or top five, and the winner was driving a chassis he built. Spencer hung on for third, while Matt Sanborn was fourth and Carey Martin fifth.

“I was hoping I was going to be the one to break Ricky’s streak,” said Hewins. “I wanted to prove that these other cars are capable of winning, too. There all the same cars, not to take away anything from Ricky’s talent, but getting the right breaks in traffic makes your chances of winning much greater.”

Polvinen earned his second victory in 48 hours in a wild Mini Stock feature. The sophomore driver from Oxford inherited the lead on lap 17 when Justin Karkos experienced mechanical trouble.

Ashley Marshall posted his best finish of 2008 with a solid second-place run, while 2004 champion Don Mooney third.
