LEWISTON – Jeff Keene and Will Emerson combined on a four-hit shutout and Mekae Hyde scored the only run on a throwing error to give Gayton a 1-0 victory over Bessey Motors in Game 1 of a American Legion doubleheader Saturday.
Bessey Motors ripped seven extra-base hits in the nightcap to salvage a split with a 12-3 triumph.
Gayton (8-2) remains a half-game in front of Bessey Motors (7-2) for first place in Zone III.
Gayton scored the lone run in the opener in the sixth inning. Hyde led off with a single and was sacrificed to second. After an intentional walk, pitcher Dillon Trundy retired the next batter on a fly ball and appeared out of the inning when Jeff Keene followed with an infield grounder, but the throw was wild, allowing Hyde to trot home.
Gayton took the early lead in Game 2, but Bessey pushed ahead 3-2 in the third before putting the game away with three runs in each of the final three innings.
Ryan Yates had a solo home run, while Brandon Chase, Travis Fillebrown and Cody Hadley added triples.
Smith-Tobey sweeps Swasey-Torrey
DIXFIELD – Tim Bickford and Tommy Dunn ollected five hits each on the day to lead Smith-Tobey to a doubleheader sweep of Swasey-Torrey of Dixfield in Zone III Amercian Legion action Saturday.
Dunn went 3-for-3 with three runs scored as Smith-Tobey won Game 1, 16-6, in a game called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Smith-Tobey pulled away with five runs each in the fourth and fifth innings. Matt Bickford and Tim Bickford rapped two hits and scored two runs apiece. Ryan Lafleur went 2-for-3 to lead Swasey-Torrey.
Tim Bickford went 3-for-4 and Dunn notched two hits as Smith-Tobey completed the sweep, 9-6, in Game 2.
John Frey picked up the win after fanning seven and walking five. Trailing 9-2 at one point, Swasey-Torrey (1-8) got the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but Jared Erdman shut the door to pick up the save for Smith-Tobey (8-3). Aaron Fenstermacher and Arik Fenstermacher had two hits apiece for Swasey-Torrey.
New Auburn sweeps Cole Farms
AUBURN – Adam Redmun and Adam Lutz allowed four hits between them in two games to lead New Auburn to a doubleheader sweep of Cole Farms in Zone III American Legion baseball Saturday.
New Auburn (6-4) took Game 1, 8-2, and broke out the bats again in Game 2 to post an 11-1 victory.
Mike Muise led Post 153 with three hits in three at-bats in Game 1, while catcher Mike Lutz was 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored, three RBIs and two stoeln bases. Redmun earned the win with a 10-strikeout performance to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Tom Rich provided both hits for Cole Farms (5-6) in the first game, including a home run.
In Game 2, Adam Lutz and Eric Prue each tripled and every starter had at least one hit for New Auburn. Billy Brewster was 2-for-2 with a walk, three runs scored and two stolen bases in the winning effort.
Artie Winship suffered the loss for Post 86.
Northern Oxford County, Andy Valley split
TURNER – Justin Staires provided the pop at the plate as Northern Oxford County doubled up Andy Valley 14-7 in the first game of a Saturday morning twinbill.
Staires cranked out three hits, including a home run and a double, drove in three runs and drew a pair of free passes to compliment his win on the mound.
Derek Baley and Ben French each tallied four hits for Northern Oxford County with Baley crushing three doubles and knocking in three runs.
Zach Keene paced Andy Valley with three hits while Derek Castonguay took the loss.
Andy Valley came back with a 4-2 victory in game two on the strength of Dan Danforth’s five-hit complete game victory and two-run single that capped a four-run second inning.
After giving up a two-run homer to Staires in the first, Danforth kept the Northern Oxford County bats in check for the balance of the game.
Ryan Jackson added a pair of hits for Andy Valley and Derek Baley registered two hits for Northern Oxford County.
Monmouth sweeps Amato’s
ROCKLAND – Monmouth pounded out 33 hits, including five home runs, and dominated Amato’s to sweep both ends of a doubleheader, 16-7 and 17-3, in Zone II American Legion action Saturday.
Tyler Cobb homered in both games for Monmouth (8-2), while Mike Brennan and David Ricker added went deep in Game 1 and Forrest Dwyer added a round-tripper in Game 2. Ricker,
Josh Prue and Ethan Guerette (three hits) drove in two runs apiece in the first game. Guerette, Prue, Jordan Conant and Brett Turcotte all hit doubles for Monmouth, while Dwyer picked up the win on the mound. Shane Williamson homered and Nick Lemieux doubled for Amato’s.
Cobb cracked three hits and Ricker, Prue, Dwyer, and Brennan added two apiece as Monmouth eliminated Amato’s (2-10) in five innings in the nightcap.
Tim Levesque worked four innings to pick up the win.
