BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – Kevin Dineen isn’t going anywhere after the Sabres elected to keep the former NHLer as head coach of the Portland Pirates, Buffalo’s new American Hockey League affiliate.
Sabres general manager Darcy Regier cites Dineen’s coaching record in his three previous seasons with the Pirates, his ability to develop talent and familiarity with the Maine-based team in the announcement Tuesday. The AHL’s 2006 coach of the year, Dineen has a 135-76-13 record with Portland.
Dineen was a two-time NHL All-Star during an 18-year career. He retired during the 2002-03 season.
The Sabres had the option to change coaches after ending a 29-year relationship with Rochester and signing a three-year affiliation with the Pirates in June. Portland was previously affiliated with Anaheim.
