CHICAGO (AP) – Boston Red Sox reliever David Aardsma has been activated from the 15-day disabled list after missing three weeks with a strained right groin.

The right-hander, activated Friday, had not pitched since July 18 against the Los Angeles Angels. Aardsma, 3-2 with a 2.75 ERA in 38 relief outings, threw two scoreless innings over two rehab appearances with Triple-A Pawtucket.

To make room, the Red Sox optioned right-hander Chris Smith to Pawtucket after Wednesday’s game at Kansas City.
