RUMFORD – Selectmen are expected to hold another closed door hearing on a Fire Department grievance following their regular meeting that begins at 7 p.m. in the Municipal Auditorium.

Town Manager Len Greaney said the hearing, the third grievance lodged by the Fire Department during the past few weeks, is related to the previous two. Those involved suspensions of firefighters over a letter written in support of candidates for selectmen in June.

Greaney said he denied all three grievances, which automatically triggers a hearing before selectmen. The board upheld Greaney’s denials in the first two cases.

In a related matter, selectmen are also expected to decide whether to hire a utility firefighter. Greaney said a 19th firefighter is needed to reduce overtime.

Also on Thursday, selectmen are expected to decide whether to support building a casino resort in the area. During the past couple of weeks, residents have had a chance to indicate their opinion on a yes-or-no ballot in the town office. Greaney said fewer than 100 people voted. Seth Carey, originator of the casino plan, will appear before the board to provide an update.

In other matters, Greaney will present information that could help reduce the amount of heating and transportation fuel and electricity used by municipal departments. He said he will ask each department manager to cut use by 5 to 10 percent.

Other items on the agenda include a presentation by Linda Walbridge, a state employee, on economic development, a report by Mexico fire Chief Gary Wentzell, who is now Rumford’s chief as well, and updates on unsafe buildings and public works projects.

A second closed door session is planned to discuss a loan sought by Teena’s Restaurant.
