LEWISTON – The Bates College men’s soccer team scored two goals in the first half and hung on for a 2-1 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington on Wednesday afternoon.
Dae Ro Lee scored in the second minute, heading in a cross from Peter Litwin. The Bobcats received their second goal in the 34th minute when a UMF defender knocked the ball over the goal line while attempting to move it away.
Bates outshot Farmington (1-2) 20-5 in the first half, but the Beavers rallied back to fire nine shots against Bates’ seven in the final 45 minutes. UMF struck back in the second half when Andrew Merriken made a 70-yard kick that bounced over the head of Bates keeper Greg Watts and into the net.
Field Hockey
Endicott 2, UMF 0
FARMINGTON – Cara Hanrahan and Caitlin Keating each scored in the opening half for the Endicott 2-0 win over Farmington in college field hockey action Wednesday.
Hanrahan knocked in a bid by Lindsey Mills, while Keating followed nine minutes later with an unassisted goal for the Gulls (4-1). Chelsea DeFeo recorded six saves in the shutout.
Kaeleigh Barker stopped nine shots in the Beavers (0-3) loss, while Samantha Wesbter made a defensive save in the second half to keep the game within reach.
Women’s soccer
Colby 3, UMF 0
WATERVILLE – Nikki Pickering was all the offense Colby needed Wednesday, as she scored three times for a 3-0 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington.
Pickering, a first-year player, came off the bench to score her first college goal off a pass from midfielder Meghan Edwards with 12:14 left in the first half to give Colby (2-0) the lead at intermission.
Despite a 28-9 advantage in shots by the Mules, UMF (0-1) kept the game close behind 16 saves from sophomore goalkeeper Mckell Barnes.
Pickering got an unassisted insurance goal with 16:52 to play in the game, then added her third tally with just 12 second to go. Rachel Freirman stopped five shots for Colby to earn her second straight shutout.
