They are a week late, but Friday night will be opening night for a number of players who missed action in Week 1.

Jay quarterback Austin Clark will be back under center for the Tigers’ crucial Campbell Conference tilt with Dirigo at Taglienti Field.

Clark had to sit out because a cut on his leg became infected. Freshman Zach Bonnevie filled in and helped lead the Tigers to a 20-7 win over Yarmouth.

“The leg is good,” Clark said. “I’m back on track.”

A junior and two-year starter, Clark is eager to show off what he learned from his first season running the Tigers’ spread offense.

“The reads are easier. I can read defenses better. I’m a little more confident, obviously. I know the game a lot better now,” he said.

The strong-armed Clark also worked on his agility and his pass accuracy during the off-season. He attended camps at UMaine and Old Dominion during the summer to refine his game.

Another key starter due back this week is Oxford Hills’ D.J. Drew, who will bolster the Vikings on both sides of the ball for Friday night’s game in Brewer.

The tailback topped 500 yards rushing last season and is one of several players expected to bring reinforcements to the Vikings after last week’s 53-21 loss to Edward Little.

“We’ll probably have four or five guys back to help us on our starting defense, so we’ll have better athletes out there and some juniors and seniors,” said head coach Nat e Danforth.

New Walton scoreboard to be dedicated to Hersom

Edward Little’s Grandstand Club will be dedicating the new scoreboard at Walton Field to legendary former coach Lawrence “Doc” Hersom on Friday night.

Hersom coached the Red Eddies for 16 years, winning back-to-back championships in 1976 and 1977 with his twin sons, Jim and John, on the field. The dedication will take place before the Red Eddies’ home-opener against Mt.Blue, which kicks off at 7 p.m.
