Fuel, bridge design awaits meeting action
Selectmen schedule special town meeting for Monday

NEWRY – Selectmen have scheduled a special town meeting for 5:30 p.m. Monday to take $84,200 out of surplus and about $18,000 from a capital improvement account to cover higher fuel costs and bridge designs.

At that meeting, voters will be asked to approve selectmen’s recommendations to take the following from surplus:

• $2,200 to apply to the Grange Hall maintenance account.

• $74,000 for the highways and bridges account.

• $3,950 for the municipal building account.

• $1,050 for the Bear River Fire Station account for heat and utilities.

• $3,000 for the Sunday River Fire Station for heat and utilities.

Additionally, voters are asked to take $17,940 from the capital improvement account to pay for engineered designs for three bridges along Branch Road.

Town meeting voters in March established the capital improvement account for projects involving highway, fire department, and Grange and office buildings needs, Administrator Loretta Powers said Wednesday afternoon.

Powers said the increases are due to last winter’s plowing and sanding, fuel costs, and the three bridges being replaced on Branch Road. Engineer Eric Calderwood is doing the design work.
