This time, there wasn’t a comeback in sight.
Like in their opener the night before, The Lewiston Maineiacs trailed by a goal through two periods of play. This time, the home team ran away and hid.
Former Lewiston defenseman Nicolas Therrien had a goal and an assist and fellow defenseman Christopher Guay and Dominic Jalbert had three points each to lift the homestanding Chicoutimi Sagueneens to a 6-1 win over the Maineiacs at the Georges Vezina Center on Saturday.
“We’re talking about physical fatigue and mental fatigue, having to turn around and play as quickly as we did,” Maineiacs’ coach Ed Harding said. “We certainly could have used a day off to work on some things.”
The Maineiacs allowed Therrien to try out for the Sags this season, and received a draft pick as compensation when the 19-year-old made the squad. He potted the first goal of the game at 16:38 of the opening period, and assisted on a power-play marker in the third that essentially salted the game away.
“We made them all look like all stars tonight,” Harding said. “We were just tired.”
The Maineiacs outshot Baie-Comeau in their first game of the season Friday, but had no such luck Saturday, allowing 33 shots to reach 17-year-old rookie Jonathan Connely.
On the other end, the Maineiacs only fired 21 pucks at Chicoutimi rookie Sean Coulton.
Eric Gelinas got the team’s lone goal Saturday, scoring on a power play just 1:09 after Therrien’s goal in the first.
Mathieu Populus netted the winner in the second period on a feed from Jalbert, and Louis-Felix Laporte, Guay, Jalbert and Olivier Painchaud tallied in the third to put the game out of reach.
Harding was still optimistic, though, coming back from a season-opening, two-game road trip with two points.
“If we’re at the end of the season and we’ve gone .500 on the road in this league, we’ll be happy,” Harding said. “It’s tough to play on the road in this league.”
The Maineiacs (1-1) open up at home with a pair of games against Shawinigan Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19 and 20, at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
