FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) – The Florida county commissioner where the Boston Red Sox spend spring training said he expects the team will soon leave its current ballpark in Fort Myers.
But Lee County Commissioner Ray Judah is trying to entice the team to stay in the county with proposals including a center that would include shops, restaurant and a competitive swimming site.
“I just don’t see where the current stadium will suit the Red Sox’s needs,” Judah said.
“We now are looking at a mixture of amenities which would be something the Red Sox would feel good about in terms of an alternative site,” he said.
Judah met with Red Sox chief operating office Mike Dee on Wednesday. The team did not immediately comment.
After the meeting, Judah said it was clear the team would soon leave City of Palms Park, though it’s uncertain when.
The team must give a year’s notice before leaving and hasn’t done so.
Judah said Boston wants a complex where practice fields, the weight room and a hotel are closer to the stadium.
The Red Sox are considering other sites, including one in Sarasota County.
