CANTON – Voters will decide Tuesday whether to accept more than $1.5 million in federal grants and loans to install water and sewer lines at the stalled Village Ridge housing project.
The 40 homes in the proposed development off Edmunds Road would replace those lost in a flood of the village center along Routes 140 and 108 in 2003. The town bought the land and cleared it, but voters rescinded a vote to finance further development after first approving it.
A citizen petition this month brought the funding package back to voters.
Polls will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the municipal center. Voters will be asked to accept these loans and grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development program:
• a $336,000 grant for sewer work;
• a $448,000 loan for sewer work;
• a $355,000 water line grant; and
• a $434,000 water line loan.
Village Ridge coordinator Diane Ray said federal officials told her they had confidence in the project and the money was still on the table at 4.125 percent interest.
If the articles pass, the project can continue. If they fail, the town will owe approximately $177,000 for work done on the site.
The third and final hearing on the project is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at the municipal building to hear about the development’s impact on taxes.
