ORONO – James Madison, the No. 2 football team in the country, snapped a fourth-quarter tie and pulled away for a 24-10 victory over Maine at Alfond Stadium on Saturday night.

Maine fell to 2-3 and 0-2 in the CAA, while JMU improved to 4-1 and 2-0 in the league.

Derek Session’s 35-yard touchdown run with 13:23 remaining in the fourth quarter pulled Maine even with James Madison at 10-10. It marked the first touchdown run of the redshirt freshman’s career. Session ended the game with 42 yards on only four carries. He also led Maine with five catches.

The Black Bears tried an on-side kick immediately following the score, but were flagged for interference. The Dukes got the ball at Maine’s 35-yard line and scored the eventual game-winning touchdown a few plays later on Griff Yancey’s 12-yard run.

Yancey added a score with just under four minutes remaining to seal the victory.

Red-shirt freshman Jared Turcotte of Lewiston moved from H-back to tailback to fill in for injured senior tailback Jhamal Fluellen. Turcotte rushed 11 times for 82 yards, including a long of 20 yards.

Maine scored the game’s first points at the 2:53 mark of the first quarter when freshman kicker Brian Harvey drilled a 27-yard field to put the Black Bears up 3-0. The Dukes tied the contest with 8:53 remaining in the second quarter on a Dave Stannard 26-yard field goal.

JMU quarterback Rodney Landers staked his team to a 10-3 advantage late in the third quarter on a 30-yard touchdown run.

Maine quarterback Adam Farkes completed 16-of-32 passes for 168 yards.

Defensively for Maine, senior end Jovan Belcher led all tacklers with 13 stops, including 1.5 for loss. Junior linebacker Mark Masterson had a sack and a forced fumble to go along with his six tackles. Senior linebacker Sean Wasson added 11 tackles for Maine.

Tufts 34, Bates 7

SOMERVILLE, Mass. – Big plays highlighted Tufts’s 34-7 victory over Bates College in a NESCAC game on homecoming Saturday afternoon.

The win was the 23rd straight for the Jumbos in their series against the Bobcats, dating back to 1986.

Tufts scored touchdowns on a 60-yard run by senior tailback Will Forde. a 71-yard pass from junior QB Anthony Fucillo to senior WR Stephen Black and on a 48-yard interception return by junior safety Tom Tassinari.

The Jumbos outgained the Bobcats 385 yards to 167.

The Bobcats scored their lone touchdown in the fourth quarter with the second string on the field.

Bates QB Ryan Larsen threw to TE Matt Sherburne for 13 yards to the Tufts 4. A three-yard run by Greg Thornton led to a one-yard TD rush by Ryan Mullin at 6:53 of the fourth.

Amherst 31, Bowdoin 24

BRUNSWICK – Aaron Rauh sparked a 278-yard ground game with 121 yards rushing to lead Amherst to a 31-24 win over Bowdoin.

Bowdoin quarterback Oliver Kell went 20 for 37 for 202 yards and threw three TD passes.

The Polar Bears cut the lead to 24-21 with 10 minutes remaining, but Amherst used a 10-play, 67-yard scoring drive to burn up most of the time.

Colby 24, Middlebury 19

WATERVILLE – Colby celebrated its first game at Alfond Stadium with a 24-19 triumph over Middlebury.

Colby, which opened a 24-6 advantage, rushed for 223 yards, and quarterback Patrick Burns threw three touchdown passes.

Middlebury cut the deficit to five points with 1:59 to play, but Colby recovered the onside kick.
