Not many fall sports teams celebrate their Senior Day in September.

Any pomp and circumstance surrounding the final game for upperclassmen usually waits at least for the second week of October. Heck, we’re barely past the halfway point of the season.

Tell that to the St. Dom’s field hockey squad. The Saints will play their final six regular-season games on the road after their Sept. 25 win over Sacopee Valley.

“That means we won’t be home again until Oct. 22,” said St. Dom’s coach Brian Kay, alluding to the first round of the regional playoffs. “It is unusual. We had to flip-flop a few games because of homecomings and stuff.”

St. Dom’s took full advantage of its unbalanced schedule, winning seven straight after an OT road loss to Sacopee in its opening contest.

Livermore Falls is probably the poster team for the topsy-turvy Mountain Valley Conference field hockey playoff race.

Capable of hanging with or even knocking off anyone else in the league, the Andies head into the heart of their second-half schedule at the .500 mark after Friday’s 2-0 loss to Winthrop.

The Andies (4-4), who reached the Western Class C championship game two years ago, knocked off previously unbeaten rival Jay on a goal by Chelsie Morris in double overtime Monday night.

Two days later, freshman Kathryn Ventrella scored first for the Andies before Telstar rallied to a 2-1 victory.

“Going up there and playing that well, I think it was a good effort by all the girls,” said Livermore Falls coach Julia Parker. “There was a lot of heart out there. It was a better score than last time.”

Livermore Falls fell 4-0 to Telstar in their first meeting, despite enjoying edges in shots on goal and penalty corners.

The Andies also dropped a one-goal decision to Class B Mountain Valley.

“We have another chance to meet up with them on Monday,” Parker said.

Ventrella leads Livermore Falls with eight goals. Hannah Therrien has scored five, with Morris and Annika Durrell chipping in three each.
