BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – The man accused of causing a crash in South Burlington that killed two passengers while fleeing police is being held on $100,000 bail.

Bail was set Friday for 28-year-old Michael Lewis of Burlington, who took part in the hearing by telephone from his hospital room.

Court papers say Lewis was allegedly drunk, high on the drug Ecstasy and ignored pleas from passengers to stop the car before it crashed head-on into another vehicle on Oct. 4. Eighteen-year-old Samuel Laframboise, of Burlington, and 20-year-old Jason Schumann, of Winooski died in the wreck.

Lewis has pleaded not guilty to charges of grossly negligent operation of a motor vehicle with death and serious injury resulting.
