SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) – A Springfield judge has sentenced a couple to prison for beatings that left one of their baby daughters blind and another mentally disabled.

Prosecutors said 38-year-old Robert Beaulieu fractured the girls’ skulls and caused other injuries when they were a few weeks old, one in 2005 and one in 2007. Twenty-year-old Veronica Garcia was accused of failing to stop him or get medical help. Beaulieu was sentenced Friday to 16-to-20 years in prison. Garcia was sentenced to three-to-four years.

Three-year-old Abigail is mentally disabled. Two-year-old Natasha is blind. They live with a woman who has adopted Abigail.

Authorities ended Beaulieu and Garcia’s parental rights to Abigail when she was injured but said they weren’t able to make a criminal case then.

Beaulieu was convicted in 2000 of injuring a 3-week-old baby he fathered with another woman.
